Released in 1987, "Scream Bloody Gore" is the debut studio album from the legendary American death metal band Death. This album has become an important release in the death metal genre, and it's easy to see why. From its brutal and dark sound to its outstanding production, "Scream Bloody Gore" is an album that still holds up today as a classic of the genre.

One of the first things that stands out about this album is the quality of the production. "Scream Bloody Gore" is especially impressive when you consider the time in which it was recorded. In 1987, death metal was still a relatively new and underground genre, and many albums from that era suffered from poor production values. However, "Scream Bloody Gore" stands out as a very good example of how to properly record and produce a classic death metal album.

Additionally, every instrument is well balanced, and the mix is clear and powerful, even though the final master has low volume in my opinion, making you to raise the volume of your player a little bit in order to appreciate in full all the instruments and vocals. On the other hand, the guitars have a raw and crunchy edge that slices through the mix, while the bass is thick and heavy, providing a solid foundation for the music. The drums sound massive, with every hit of the kick drum and snare drum sounding like a sledgehammer blow. The vocals, meanwhile, are perfectly placed in the mix, giving them a commanding presence that demands attention even though in some parts, I personally think that the voice has more volume than the instruments (especially the guitars and bass), but this is just a minor aspect.

Another important thing about this release is the quality of the songwriting. From the opening track "Infernal Death" to the closing track "Scream Bloody Gore", the album is filled with songs that are both catchy and brutal. The riffs are memorable and most of the melodies are haunting, making the songs stick in your head long after the album has finished, like for example the opening riff of “Zombie Ritual” or the chorus part of “Evil Dead”, “Mutilation” or “Scream Bloody Gore”. The lyrics, which deal with themes of death, gore, and violence, are also well-written and perfectly suited to the music.

One of the things that sets "Scream Bloody Gore" apart from other death metal albums is the quality of the Chuck’s guitar (and bass) playing. He was a true master of his craft, especially for this age, when he was just a 20 years old kid. His playing here is fast, precise, and incredibly technical in both instruments. Also, Schuldiner's solos are especially impressive, as it seems that are not composed with the purpose of being melodic but fast and aggressive instead, making the style of this production very unique and fits very well with the music.

In addition to Schuldiner's guitar playing, the performances of the rest of the band are also outstanding. Drummer Chris Reifert, provides a relentless barrage of beats that perfectly complements the guitar riffs. His way to play drums fits awesome with the dark and heavy music Chuck created as his attack when hitting the drums are clear and precise. Chuck, as the bassist here, adds a layer of heaviness to the music that is essential to the death metal sound, although in my very personal opinion, the bass here needs a little more presence as most of the time you need to make some effort to hear it and maybe with a more present bass, sound itself could improve significantly. And while the vocals may not be for everyone, they are undeniably powerful and effective in conveying the lyrics' dark and gruesome themes of this album. His guttural screams and growls are a hallmark of the death metal genre, and on this album, they are particularly potent. The screams of "Evil Dead", "Mutilation" and "Scream Bloody Gore" are brutal!

The only potential negative aspect of "Scream Bloody Gore" is that it may become a little monotonous. The relentless barrage of fast riffs, pounding drums, and guttural vocals can start to blend together after a while. However, the potential monotony of this album is more of a minor aspect than a serious flaw, and for fans of the genre, it is part of what makes the album so appealing.

Overall, "Scream Bloody Gore" is an album that still stands up today as a classic of the death metal genre. Its production, quality, and sound are all top-notch, and the performances of the band are nothing short of outstanding. While it may not be for everyone, fans of death metal will find much to appreciate in this album. From its memorable riffs to its powerful vocals.

Este álbum se ha convertido en un lanzamiento importante en el género del death metal, y es fácil ver por qué. Desde su sonido brutal y oscuro hasta su producción excepcional, "Scream Bloody Gore" es un álbum que aún se mantiene hoy en día como un clásico del género.

Una de las primeras cosas que destaca de este álbum es la calidad de la producción. "Scream Bloody Gore" es especialmente impresionante cuando se tiene en cuenta la época en la que fue grabado. En 1987, el death metal era todavía un género relativamente nuevo y underground, y muchos álbumes de esa época sufrían de una mala calidad de producción. Sin embargo, "Scream Bloody Gore" se destaca como un muy buen ejemplo de cómo grabar y producir adecuadamente un álbum clásico de death metal.

Además, cada instrumento está bien equilibrado, y la mezcla es clara y poderosa, aunque en mi opinión, la versión final tiene un volumen bajo, lo que hace que tengas que subir un poco el volumen de tu reproductor para poder apreciar plenamente todos los instrumentos y voces. Por otro lado, las guitarras tienen un sonido crudo y crujiente que se abre paso en la mezcla, mientras que el bajo es grueso y pesado, proporcionando una base sólida para la música. La batería suena masiva, con cada golpe del bombo y la caja sonando como un martillo. Las voces, por su parte, están perfectamente ubicadas en la mezcla, lo que les da una presencia imponente que exige atención, aunque en algunas partes, personalmente creo que la voz tiene más volumen que los instrumentos (especialmente las guitarras y el bajo), pero este es solo un aspecto menor.

Otra cosa importante sobre este lanzamiento es la calidad de la composición de las canciones. Desde la primer canción "Infernal Death" hasta la pista de cierre "Scream Bloody Gore", el álbum está lleno de canciones que son a la vez pegadizas y brutales. Los riffs son memorables y la mayoría de las melodías son inquietantes, haciendo que las canciones se queden en tu cabeza mucho después de que el álbum haya terminado, como por ejemplo el riff inicial de "Zombie Ritual" o la parte del coro de "Evil Dead", "Mutilation" o "Scream Bloody Gore". Las letras, que tratan temas de muerte, gore y violencia, también están bien escritas y son perfectamente adecuadas para la música.

Una de las cosas que distingue a "Scream Bloody Gore" de otros álbumes de death metal es la calidad de la guitarra (y bajo) de Chuck. Él era un verdadero maestro, especialmente para su edad, cuando era un chico de tan solo 20 años. Su interpretación aquí es rápida, precisa e increíblemente técnica en ambos instrumentos. Además, los solos de Schuldiner son especialmente impresionantes, ya que parece que no fueron compuestos con el propósito de ser melódicos, sino más bien rápidos y agresivos, lo que hace que el estilo de esta producción sea muy único y se adapte muy bien a la música.

Además del trabajo en la guitarra de Schuldiner, las actuaciones del resto de la banda también son excepcionales. El baterista Chris Reifert ofrece un implacable ataque de ritmos que complementa perfectamente los riffs de guitarra. Su forma de tocar la batería encaja perfectamente con la música oscura y pesada que Chuck creó, ya que su forma de ataque a los tambores es clara y precisa. Chuck, como bajista, agrega una capa de pesadez a la música que es esencial para el sonido del death metal, aunque en mi opinión personal, el bajo aquí necesita un poco más de presencia, ya que la mayoría del tiempo hay que hacer un esfuerzo para escucharlo y tal vez con un bajo más presente, el sonido podría mejorar significativamente. Y aunque las voces pueden no ser para todos, son indudablemente poderosos y efectivos para transmitir los temas oscuros y horripilantes de las letras de este álbum. Sus gritos guturales son una característica del género del death metal, y en este álbum, son particularmente potentes. ¡Los gritos de "Evil Dead", "Mutilation" y "Scream Bloody Gore" son brutales!

El único aspecto potencialmente negativo de "Scream Bloody Gore" es que puede volverse un poco monótono. El implacable bombardeo de riffs rápidos, baterías contundentes y voces guturales puede empezar a mezclarse después de un tiempo. Sin embargo, la posible monotonía de este álbum es más un aspecto menor que un defecto grave, y para los fans del género, es parte de lo que hace que el álbum sea tan atractivo.

En resumen, "Scream Bloody Gore" es un álbum que aún hoy se mantiene como un clásico del género del death metal. Su producción, calidad y sonido son de primera calidad, y las actuaciones de la banda son impresionantes. Si bien puede que no sea para todos, los fanáticos del death metal encontrarán mucho que apreciar en este álbum. Desde sus riffs memorables hasta sus voces poderosas.

Las canciones que más recomiendo: Infernal Death, Zombie Ritual, Evil Death and Scream Bloody Gore, que es mi favorita personal.

 

Grecco - Círculo de redención

Very well done for their first production - 90%

I have to say that I started to listen to Grecco since their first full-length album, "The Feeling of not being Alone" and I get used to their sound and style, even in the "The Rise of the Revenants" the music is pretty similar as well, but "Circulo de Redencion" is just a not well-known masterpiece. Why? Let me explain it.

First of all, the sound of this demo is just different compared to their most recent releases and this is because they were progressive/power metal in their early years, and I have to admit that I was waiting some guttural screams or even some death metal-like riffs when I played the first song, but for my surprise, the music was totally different! And I liked it to be honest, even though is not the same Grecco as the one we can hear now. After hearing this demo for the first time, I personally prefer Grecco as a progressive/power metal band than a death/progressive metal one. And don't get me wrong, Grecco as a death/progressive metal and is excellent, but I think their potential could be more exploited if they dedicate their music to the power metal and this first demo is a clear evidence about it. Additionally, in their recent albums, you can identify more power/progressive riffs than metal ones.

By listening to this demo, you can appreciate that, even though this production was released 23 years ago, the production, mastering, mixing and record of each of the songs was very well done, especially because in Costa Rica on those years, was kind of difficult to find a good place to record a demo with a high quality as "Circulo de Redención".

Also, Andrés vocals here are very well-fitted with the music, demonstrating his awesome vocal skills for power metal songs, that in my opinion, is a waste of talent for Grecco in general, especially because Andrés guttural vocals are not as good for their music in their most recent releases.

In general, "Circulo de Redención" is a not very well-known masterpiece almost forgotten in time and this is because Grecco itself doesn't want this demo to be more appreciated, but I understand them, their music style is different now, and they're writing their lyrics in English now, instead of Spanish as in this demo. But, well, hopefully in the future we can hear more "power Grecco" instead of the death one, at least as a tribute to their roots in the Costa Rican metal scene, but maybe I'm asking too much. Anyway, as a power metal production I highly recommend "Circulo de Redención" and personally I recommend "Un final" and "Circulo de Redención" songs.

Muy bien hecho para ser su primera producción - 90%

Tengo que decir que empecé a escuchar a Grecco desde su primer álbum completo, "The Feeling of not being Alone", y me acostumbré a su sonido y estilo, incluso en "The Rise of the Revenants" la música es bastante similar, pero "Círculo de Redención" es simplemente una obra maestra poco conocida. ¿Por qué? Déjame explicarlo.

En primer lugar, el sonido de esta demo es simplemente diferente en comparación con sus lanzamientos más recientes, y esto se debe a que eran power metal progresivo en sus primeros años, y debo admitir que estaba esperando algunos gritos guturales o incluso algunos riffs tipo death metal cuando reproduje la primera canción, pero para mi sorpresa, ¡La música era totalmente diferente! Y me gustó, para ser honesto, aunque no es el mismo Grecco que podemos escuchar ahora. Después de escuchar esta demo por primera vez, personalmente prefiero a Grecco como una banda de power metal progresivo que de death metal progresivo. Y no me malinterpreten, Grecco como una banda de death metal progresivo es excelente, pero creo que su potencial podría ser más explotado si dedican su música al power metal, y esta primera demo es una clara evidencia de ello. Además, en sus álbumes recientes, se pueden identificar más riffs de power metal progresivo que de metal.

Al escuchar este demo, se puede apreciar que, aunque esta producción fue lanzada hace 23 años, la producción, masterización, mezcla y grabación de cada una de las canciones fue muy bien hecha, especialmente porque en esos años en Costa Rica era difícil encontrar un buen lugar para grabar una demo con una alta calidad como "Círculo de Redención".

Además, las voces de Andrés aquí están muy bien ajustadas a la música, demostrando sus impresionantes habilidades vocales para las canciones de power metal, que en mi opinión, es un desperdicio de talento para Grecco en general, especialmente porque las voces guturales de Andrés no son tan buenas para su música en sus lanzamientos más recientes.

En general, "Círculo de Redención" es una obra maestra poco conocida casi olvidada en el tiempo y esto se debe a que Grecco en sí misma no quiere que este demo sea más reconocido, pero los entiendo, su estilo de música es diferente ahora, y están escribiendo sus letras en inglés en lugar de español como en este demo. Pero, bueno, espero que en el futuro podamos escuchar más "Power metal de Grecco" en lugar del de death metal, al menos como un homenaje a sus raíces en la escena del metal costarricense, pero tal vez estoy pidiendo demasiado. De todos modos, como producción de power metal, recomiendo encarecidamente "Círculo de Redención" y personalmente recomiendo las canciones "Un final" y "Círculo de Redención".

 

Full of Hate - Adulterated

The thrash essencen is there - 70%

I consider myself as a Thrash Metal fan since my first encounter with metal when I was a teenager and with time, Thrash Metal became one of my favorites genres, which means, I'm always looking for new thrash albums, EP's or demos to listen because this way, I found a lot of great bands with high quality music and "Full of Hate" is one of those productions I discovered by looking for thrash metal bands here on MA.

By listening to this EP for the first time, you can identify that the music quality is not so good as expected for an EP, but don't expect an ultra poor quality, the recording and mastering of this EP is actually good, not excellent, but good. Also, for being played by only two musicians, I have to say that they did a very good job here and each instrument is recorded in a good way and is not opaque by drums or other instrument, but I can't say the same with the vocals, at some point and almost in every song, all instruments sound much louder than the voice of Pablo.

Speaking about the vocals of "Full of Hate", I think Pablo's voice sounds most likely like a punk-like voice, which I know can be fitted to thrash metal, for example, most of the thrash metal/crossover bands out there. So, here is the big "but", this is supposed to be a Thrash Metal band, so I was expecting a voice more proper for the genre and this doesn't mean that Pablo's voice is not good for the music, it fits actually, but personally I'd prefer the same voice with some guttural-like sound.

Another thing I'd like to take into consideration is that, the song "Trepidation" is almost a cover of "Seasons in the Abyss" by Slayer, at least for first half of the song. I think it'd be better if they covered the actual Slayer song instead of trying to create an "original" song taking almost the same riffs of the Slayer's song. It is totally fine if you inspire your music taking into consideration your favorite band's style at the moment you create music, but another different thing is to take a song from one of your favorite bands, and play some riffs as your "own" song. In my opinion, this is something I didn't like at all for this EP, I think a Slayer cover would be better instead.

But anyway, to finish, I don't want you to get me wrong about the band, they are actually playing good thrash metal and I really enjoy the music they produce, especially "I Will" and "Keep on this Hell" which are my favorite songs of this EP, but there are some things they could improve for further releases like adjusting the volume of the voice and instruments, not to almost copy a song and hopefully, with a full line-up as they have now, we can hear some new material which I'm pretty sure, will not disappoint us, because the thrash essence is there.

La esencia del thrash está ahí - 70%

Me considero un fanático del Thrash Metal desde mi primer encuentro con el metal cuando era adolescente y con el tiempo, el Thrash Metal se convirtió en uno de mis géneros favoritos, lo que significa que siempre estoy buscando nuevos álbumes, EPs o demos de thrash para escuchar, porque de esta manera he descubierto muchas bandas geniales con música de alta calidad y "Full of Hate" es una de esas producciones que descubrí al buscar bandas de thrash metal aquí en MA.

Al escuchar este EP por primera vez, puedes identificar que la calidad musical no es tan buena como se espera para un EP, pero tampoco esperes una calidad ultra pobre, la grabación y el mastering de este EP es en realidad bueno, no excelente, pero bueno. Además, para ser tocado por solo dos músicos, tengo que decir que hicieron un muy buen trabajo aquí y cada instrumento está grabado de manera buena y no es opacado por batería u otro instrumento, pero no puedo decir lo mismo de las voces, en algún momento y en casi todas las canciones, todos los instrumentos suenan mucho más fuerte que la voz de Pablo.

Hablando de las voces de "Full of Hate", creo que la voz de Pablo suena muy similar a una voz punk, lo cual sé que puede adaptarse al thrash metal, por ejemplo, la mayoría de las bandas de thrash metal / crossover que hay por ahí. Pero, (aquí está el gran "pero"), se supone que esta es una banda de Thrash Metal, así que esperaba una voz más adecuada para el género y esto no significa que la voz de Pablo no sea buena para la música, en realidad se adapta, pero personalmente preferiría la misma voz con un sonido más gutural.

Otra cosa que me gustaría tener en cuenta es que la canción "Trepidation" es casi un cover de "Seasons in the Abyss" de Slayer, al menos durante la primera mitad de la canción. Creo que sería mejor si hicieran un cover de la canción de Slayer real en lugar de intentar crear una canción "original" tomando casi los mismos riffs de la canción de Slayer. Está totalmente bien si inspiras tu música teniendo en cuenta el estilo de tu banda favorita en el momento en que creas música, pero otra cosa diferente es tomar una canción de una de tus bandas favoritas y tocar algunos riffs como si fueran tu propia canción. En mi opinión, esto es algo que no me gustó en absoluto de este EP y creo que un cover de Slayer sería mejor en su lugar.

Pero de todas formas, para terminar, no quiero que me malinterpreten sobre la banda, en realidad están tocando buen thrash metal y realmente disfruto la música que producen, especialmente "I Will" y "Keep on this Hell", que son mis canciones favoritas de este EP, pero hay algunas cosas que podrían mejorar para futuras publicaciones como ajustar el volumen de la voz y los instrumentos, no copiar casi una canción y con su alineación completa como la tienen ahora, podríamos escuchar nuevo material que estoy bastante seguro que no nos decepcionará, porque la esencia del thrash está ahí.

 

Killer Souls - Reckoning

Pure Fucking Thrash Metal - 100%

I know I said this in other previous reviews, but I'm a big fan of thrash metal genre. When I was a teenager and I started to listen to metal, thrash metal was one of the first genres I've ever heard since the very beginning of my metal path, so this album, perfectly played by Killer Souls, demonstrate that the essence of thrash metal is still alive out there and will make you headbang a lot.

Before I start with the review content, it's very rare that I can give a 100% score on any album I hear, independently of the genre, but I need to stand up and applaud the work that Killer Souls did here. I just fucking love this album! Let me tell you why.

First of all, I have to say that I listened to Killer Souls since their very first release and in the beginning, they know how to create high quality music, and especially, thrash metal, but "Reckoning" album is the clear evidence of their improvement as a band, everything here is just perfect. The recording, mastering and mixing work here was excellently done, you as a listener, will be able to hear every instrument without any effort from you and you can identify every note played by their very skillful musicians. Drums, guitars, bass and vocals can be heard in a perfect way here and no instrument is opaqued by another one or even the vocals, so I have to take my hat off and congratulate their job done in this release. Also, Edgar's voice, in my opinion, fits perfect in their music style, giving to the band a very powerful and "thrash" essence that makes you remember the thrash metal produced in the 90's but with an actual music like Warbringer or actual Kreator for example, which means the best thrash metal are not the "old school" one, the newer one is also a very good option to hear, especially with melodic riffs as "Reckoning" album, even though if you're more familiarized with the thrash produced in the past.

In terms of their music as a general, every song is very well composed and have powerful riffs that will make you headbang at least once, but I'm pretty sure it'll be more than once. I bet that if you take away the voice and just listen to the music and I tell you "Hey, have you heard the new Kreator's song?" I'm pretty sure you'll say this is Kreator song as a first impression. Also, every musician here is skillful enough to play a well done thrash metal. Additionally, the solos are very clean and you can distinguish every note from them as well as the harmonized ones that gives to the band a very unique style that sounds actually pretty good.

Finally, if you like thrash metal as much as I do, "Reckoning" is more than recommended. In a personal opinion, you MUST have this one. Why? C'mon, this is just a very well done thrash metal and you will be not disappointed by this album. This will give you enough faith in actual thrash metal and I have to say that I cannot recommend you just one or two songs from this album because all songs are just perfect, but "There's Nothing Without Blood", "Reckoning" and "The Unborn" (this last one my personal favorite) are my recommendations. ¡Puro puto Thrash metal! - 100%

Sé que ya lo he dicho en algunas otras reseñas, pero soy un gran fan del Thrash Metal. Cuando era un adolescente y empecé a escuchar metal, el Thrash Metal fue uno de los primeros géneros que escuché y el principio de mi camino por el Metal, así que este álbum, tocado perfecto por Killer Souls, demuestra que la esencia del Thrash Metal aún está viva y te hará mover un montón la cabeza.

Antes de comenzar con la reseña, es muy extraño que de un 100% en cualquier álbum que escuche, independientemente del género, pero me pongo de pie y aplaudo por el trabajo que los miembros de Killer Souls hicieron aquí. ¡Amo este puto álbum! Y déjame decirte por qué.

Primero que todo, tengo que decir que he escuchado Killer Souls desde su primer lanzamiento y desde el principio, ellos supieron cómo crear música de gran calidad y especialmente, Thrash Metal, pero “Reckoning” es el claro ejemplo de su mejore como banda, todo aquí es simplemente perfecto. La grabación, la mezcla y el trabajo de masterización fue hecho excelentemente y tú, como escucha, podrás apreciar cada instrumento sin ningún esfuerzo y podrás identificar cada nota tocada por sus habilidosos músicos. La batería, guitarras, bajo y voz se pueden escuchar perfectamente y ningún instrumento opaca al otro o a la voz, por lo que tengo que felicitar su trabajo en este lanzamiento. También, la voz de Edgar, en mi opinión, encaja perfecto con su música, dándole a la banda una muy profesional esencia “Thrash” que te hará recordar el Thrash producido en los 90’s pero con toques actuales, como Warbringer o el actual Kreator por ejemplo, lo que significa que no todo el buen Thrash metal no es solo “el de la vieja escuela”, el moderno también es muy bueno, especialmente los riffs melódicos del disco “Reckoning”, incluso si estás más familiarizado con el Thrash producido en el pasado.

En términos de su música en general, cada canción fue bien compuesta y tiene riffs poderosos que le harán mover la cabeza por lo menos una vez, pero estoy seguro que lo hará más de una vez. Apuesto a que si quitas la voz y escuchas solo la música y te digo “Oye, ¿Ya escuchaste la nueva canción de Kreator?” Estoy seguro que pensará que es una nueva canción de Kreator como primera impresión. Además, cada músico aquí es lo suficientemente hábil para tocar buen Thrash metal. Adicionalmente, los solos son bastante limpios y puedes distinguir cada nota de ellos de igual forma que los armonizados le dan a la banda un estilo único que suena bastante bien.

Finalmente, si te gusta el Thrash metal tanto como a mí, “Reckoning” está más que recomendado. En una opinión personal, DEBES tener este disco. ¿Por qué? Vamos, esto es solo Thrash metal bien hecho y no te decepcionarás de este disco. Este te dará suficiente fe en el Thrash moderno y tengo que decir que no puedo recomendar solo una o dos canciones de este álbum porque todas las canciones son perfectas, pero “There’s Nothing Without Blood”, “Reckoning” y “The Unborn” (esta última mi favorita personal) son mis recomendaciones. Si estás leyendo esto y no has escuchado el disco ¿Qué estás esperando? Ve a su Bandcamp y apoya a la banda comprando su álbum, valdrá la pena. Confía en mí.

Well produced but I'm not into it - 55%

Before I can share my opinion about this EP, I have to say that I'm not a very black metal/post-black metal fan, but this case is different because a personal philosophy is that you always need to be open to a different genres and music styles independently if you're not a big fan of X or Y genre. In this case, "Primeval" is the first production I've ever heard of post-black metal and unfortunately, is not my kind of music (at least, taking this production as a reference to the genre). Why? Let me explain it.

 

In a very personal way, I always want to start with the "bad things" first because I can give my opinion about this, but later on, I can say the positive things about the production as a way to express that not everything is bad and there are things that are very well done so, this EP will not be the exception, I'll start with the bad things first.

 

First of all, and I think this is the most relevant aspect of this production that makes me give a bad/neutral review, is that the music is extremely monotonous. I got tired of hearing the same riff over and over again for several minutes and I have to say that variety will help the listener to get hooked to your music. Obviously, I know some repetitive riffs could be interesting, but as an advice, don't abuse of this because your music could bore the listener and get the worng idea of your music.

 

Also, another thing that I didn't enjoy at all was the black metal voice of Sara. I know it's black metal and I know vocals needs to be black metal-like screams with a harsh tone, but on this production, the voice didn't fit at all the music as expected for a black metal band, the lot of echo in the voice, in my opinion, is not well fitted with the music.

 

Now, I'll share the good things about this EP that I have to say, I got surprised with the two last songs of this production. "Yarilo" and "Nature" are the most black metal songs on this EP and I have to say that those actually sounds really good, especially because they are more "metal" that the previous ones. Additionally, Sara's clean voice on "Nature" was a very big surprise for me because, this time, fitted perfectly with the music, giving a very interesting ambient to the music.

 

In terms of production, mastering, mixing, etcetera; I have to say that they did a very good job here. All instruments are well recorded (including the voices) and no instrument opaque each other, you can perfectly hear the guitars, bass and drums accordingly without making any effort from your part to distinguish which instrument is being played and which one is not.

 

Finally, I can say that I didn't enjoy this EP as much as I desired, but hopefully, if they can produce more music in the future by adding a little bit of variety on their music, they could get a very well produced music style that can be enjoyed, and with this, I don't want you to get me wrong, at the end, this is just my opinion based on what I heard, but maybe if you're more into post-black metal, this could be a very good/excellent release for you, but is not my case and this doesn't mean this is a poor or very bad release though.

 Bien producido pero no es lo mío - 55%

Antes de compartir mi opinión acerca de este EP, tengo que decir que no soy muy fan del black metal/post-black metal, pero este caso es diferente porque una filosofía personal que tengo es que usted siempre debe ser abierto a escuchar diferentes géneros y estilos de música independientemente si no es muy fan de X o Y género. En este caso, "Primeval" es la primer producción que he escuchado del género post-black metal  y desafortunadamente, no es mi estilo de música (al menos, tomando esta producción como referencia al género). ¿Por qué? Déjenme explicarlo.

De una manera muy personal, siempre me gusta empezar con "las cosas malas" porque puedo dar mi opinión al respecto pero, luego puedo decir las cosas positivas acerca de la producción como manera de expresar que no todo es tan malo y que hay cosas que están muy bien hechas, por lo que este EP no va a ser la excepción y empezaré con las cosas malas primero.

Primero que todo, y pienso que es el aspecto más relevante en esta producción y que me hace darle una mala/neutral reseña, es que la música es extremadamente monótona. Me cansé de escuchar el mismo riff una y otra vez por varios minutos y tengo que decir que la variedad ayudará al que escucha a engancharse a su música. Obviamente, Se que algunos riffs repetitivos pueden ser interesantes, pero como consejo, no abusen de esto porque su música puede aburrir al que escucha y crearse una idea errónea de su música.

También, otra cosa que no difruté del todo es la voz black metal de Sara. Se que es black metal y se que las voces necesitan tener esos gritos black metal y un tono duro, pero en esta producción, la voz no encaja del todo en la música como se espera de una banda de black metal, el montón de eco en la voz, en mi opinión, no encaja bien con la música.

Ahora, voy a compartir las cosas buenas acerca de este EP y tengo que decir que me sorprendí con las últimas dos canciones de esta producción. "Yarilo" y "Nature" fueron las canciones más black metal de este EP y tengo que decir que estas suenan bastante bien, especialmente porque son más "metal" que las canciones anteriores. Adicionalmente, la voz limpia de Sara on "Nature" fue una gran sopresa para mi porque, esta vez, encajó perfecto con la música, dándole un ambiente interesante.

En términos de producción, masterizado, mezcla, etcétera; tengo que decir que ellos hicieron un excelente trabajo aquí. Todos los instrumentos se grabaron bien (incluyendo las voces) y ningún instrumento opaca al otro, usted puede escuchar perfectamente las guitarras, el bajo y la batería adecuadamente sin hacer ningún esfuerzo de su parte para distinguir cuál instrumento está sonando y cuál no.

Finalmente, puedo decir que no disfruté de este EP como pensaba pero, si ellos pudieran  producir más música en el futuro agregando un poco más de variedad, ellos pueden obtener una música muy bien producida que puede ser disfrutada, y con esto, no quiero que me malinterpreten, al final, esta es solo mi opinión basada en lo que escuché, pero tal vez si usted está más metido en el post-black metal, este puede ser un buen/excelente EP para usted, pero no es mi caso y no esto no significa que que esta es una pobre o muy mala producción.

 

Apocalypto - Podrido blasfemo extremo y oscuro

Not bad for their first work - 85%

I am not a fan of black metal and only like some songs from this genre, but listening to this Apocalypto production, I can realize that they did an excellent job here, mixing black with death metal and giving this band a really nice sound, even if this is their first demo.

First of all, mixing, mastering and tone of the instruments are done well, considering most demos are medium or bad quality. But in this one, the band put a lot of effort, trying to get an excellent sound from each instrument, listening very well every note of each. This seems to me that the musicians have a vast experience in the metal scene.

Even if the demo has a great sound, I have to say there are some things that they can improve for next productions. In this demo they only recorded one guitar and I would like to hear a background guitar when a solo is played. Also, the voices needs to sound a little bit louder because in some cases, the instruments make the voice opaque.

Also, this demo has a Death cover so I need to write about it because I'm a big Death fan and think that with the quality of their sound (speed, technique and genre), they could do a better job in the Evil Dead cover here. The speed of the song is slower than the original Death song, so when you listen to the song with a higher speed that makes you headbang, this one is slower and maybe you will not like it for that reason.

Finally, if you like death metal and black metal as well, I recommend this band even if they only have one demo with short songs. They did a great job here, and you will enjoy listening to this demo and the dark riffs it has. Although they should improve some things in later productions, the truth is that they are skilled musicians that can play great music in the future.

Nada mal para su primer trabajo - 85%

No soy un gran fan del black metal y solo me gustan algunas canciones de este género, pero escuchando esta producción de Apocalypto, puedo apreciar que hicieron un gran trabajo aquí, mezclando black con death metal y dándole a la banda un buen sonido, incluso si es su primer demo.

Primero que todo, la mezcla, masterización y tono de los instrumentos está muy bien hecho, considerando que la mayoría de los demos tienen media o pobre calidad. Pero en este, la banda hizo un gran esfuerzo, tratando de obtener un excelente sonido de cada instrumento y escuchándose muy bien cada nota. Esto me parece que los músicos tienen una vasta experiencia en la escena metal.

Incluso si este demo tiene un gran sonido, tengo que decir que hay ciertas cosas que ellos pueden mejorar para próximas producciones. En este demo, ellos solo grabaron una guitarra y me hubiera gustado poder escuchar una guitarra de fondo mientras los solos se escuchan. También, las voces necesitan ser escuchadas un poco más porque en algunos casos, los instrumentos opacan la voz.

También, este demo tiene un cover de Death y tengo que escribir al respecto porque soy un gran fan de Death y pienso que la calidad del sonido (velocidad, técnica y género), pudo haber sido un poco mejor en el cover de Evil Death. La velocidad es menor que la canción original de Death, entonces cuando escuchas la canción con mayor velocidad y que te hace hacer headbang, esta tiene menor velocidad y no me gusta por esta razón.

Finalmente, si te gusta el black y death metal, recomiendo esta banda incluso si ellos solo tienen un demo con pocas canciones. Ellos hicieron un grran trabajo aquí  y vas a disfrutar escuchando este demo y los riffs oscuros que tiene. Aunque ellos deben mejorar algunas cosas para futuras producciones, la verdad es que ellos son músicos muy habilidosos que pueden tocar música genial en el futuro.

  

Onmyouza - Kishibojin

The Beginning of a New Era - 98%

I have some years listening to Onmyouza and with time, I became a very big fan of their music and concept, mixing almost perfectly, Japanese folklore and heavy metal with high power in their music. One of the best characteristics of Onmyouza is the variations on their music and their very skillful musicians, that "squeeze" each instrument note. Onmyouza never plays the same music in terms of music genre as well. For example, in one album, you can perfectly listen heavy metal, power metal, thrash metal rhythms, ballads and for me, they have progressive metal influences too. For that reason, this production is not the exception.

But, I always think that the Tora's left from the band, affects significantly the band, for that reason, they "need a change" to respect, or maybe, to afford the drummer's left. So, Kishibojin is the beginning of a new era for Onmyouza and this album proves it well. First of all, for this album especially, I will reduce the songs name because all have the "Kumikyoku Kishibojin" in it, so I will take the real name of the song, for example, "Samayoi", "Shuushuu" and so on.

Then, when you hear the first song (Shuushuu) and starts "Samayoi" you immediately realize that the Onmyouza's average sound has changed a lot, especially the guitar and bass sound, giving them a darker and heavier sound to their songs and I have to say that I love it. Although the sound has changed, the vocals are almost the same but, feeds perfectly with their new style and rhythm, that won't disappoint if you have some time listening to Onmyouza.

Another important thing, is the creation of a concept album, in the way that all the songs have the previous titles, that means that you almost can't listen to this release without respecting the order. For example, if you have listened to their previous albums, you will perceive that other songs have the same "Kumikyoku" in the titles, like "Kumikyoku Kyuubi", "Kumikyoku Yoshitsune" or "Kumikyoku Kurozuka" and I have to say that I know some Japanese, so I realize that the "Kumikyoku" songs are like stories or tales, for that reason can't be listened separately, because would lose their essence, even if you don't have knowledge in Japanese language.

In terms of mastering, mixing and producing, the work done here is simply great. All instruments feed perfectly with the voices and the adding of a keyboard on this album, brings to their songs a melodic style that makes their sound more professional and experienced. Also, guitars solos sound great and, as usual, the harmonized melodies are present in this production, and makes me love this more because they maintain their initial music style. Although some tracks have a very heavy rhythm like "Namasu", "Samayoi" or "Kishibojin" they know how to feed their voices in any song, harmonizing it without losing their characteristic style.

Additionally, this album have two ballads (Gekkou and Zakuro to Jubaku), that makes a soft essence to the concept, guessing that the lyrics tell a story about Kishibojin (The goddess of childbirth), that probably is sad or quiet but will take to the listener into a musical trip similar to watching a movie or reading a book, for that reason, I think that without these songs, the album won't be the same, because is the Onmyouza's style and even you are expecting a ballad in almost any album and, for sure, the Onmyouza's ballads are pretty good.

Finally, if you are new listening to Onmyouza's newest productions, you will love this one because are the beginning of their new musical era but, if you have some years listening to them and you are familiarized with their "old" sound, prepare for a drastic change, because, from this album, the darker riffs and songs will be more constant. Also, this album might be a "must-have" even if you don't know Japanese, their music, style, and rhythm won't disappoint you.

Songs that I recommend: "Samayoi", "Namasu", "Zakuro to Jubaku", "Kishibojin", "Michi" and "Kikoku".

El Comienzo de una Nueva Era - 98%

Tengo algunos años escuchando Onmyouza y con el tiempo, me convertí en un gran fan de su música y su concepto, mezclando casi a la perfección, folclore japonés y heavy metal con un gran poder en su música. Una de las mejores características de Onmyouza es la gran variedad en su música y sus músicos habilidosos, que “exprimen” cada nota de su intrumento. Onmyouza nunca toca la misma música en términos de género. Por ejemplo, en un álbum, usted puede escuchar perfectamente heavy metal, power metal, ritmos thrash metal, baladas y para mi, también tienen influencias de progressive metal también. Por esa razón, esta producción no es la excepción.

Pero, siempre pensé que la salida de Tora de la banda, los afectó significativamente, por esta razón, ellos “necesitaban un cambio” para respetar, o talvez, afrontar la salida de su baterista. Así, Kishibojin es el principio de una nueva era para Onmyouza y este álbum lo prueba bien. Primero que todo, para este álbum específicamente, voy a reducir el nombre de las canciones porque todas tienen el “Kumikyoku Kishibojin”, entonces voy a tomar el nombre real de cada canción, por ejemplo, “Samayoi”, “Shuushuu” y así.

Entonces, cuando escucha la primera canción (Shuushuu) y luego empieza “Samayoi”, usted inmediatamente realiza que el sonido típico de Onmyouza cambió bastante, específicamente el sonido de las guitarras y el bajo, dándole un sonido más oscuro y pesado a sus canciones y tengo que decir que me encantó. Aunque el sonido haya cambiado, las voces son casi las mismas, pero encajan perfectamente con su nuevo estilo y ritmo que no te decepcionará si tiene tiempo de escuchar Onmyouza.

Otro aspecto importante es la creación de un álbum conceptual, en la manera en que sus canciones tienen títulos previos, que significa que casi debes escuchar cada canción respetando su orden. Por ejemplo, si ha escuchado alguno de sus álbumes anteriores, puedes apreciar que otras canciones tienen el mismo “Kumikyoku” en los títulos, por ejemplo, “Kumikyoku Kyuubi”, “Kumikyoku Yoshitsune” o “Kumikyoku Kurozuka” y tengo que decir que se algo de japonés, entonces entendí que las canciones “Kumikyoku” son como historias o cuentos, por esa razón no se pueden escuchar separadas, porque se perdería su esencia, incluso si no tiene conocimiento en el idioma japonés.

En términos de masterizado, mezcla y producción, el trabajo realizado aquí es simplemente genial. Todos los instrumentos encajan perfectamente con las voces y agregando un teclado a este álbum, da a sus canciones un estilo melódico que hace sus canciones más profesionales y con experiencia. También, los solos de guitarra suenan genial, como siempre, las melodías armonizadas están presentes en esta producción y me hacen amar este disco cada vez más porque mantienen su estilo musical inicial. Aunque algunas canciones tienen un ritmo más pesado como “Namasu”, “Samayoi” o “Kishibojin”. Ellos supieron cómo encajar las voces en cada canción, armonizándolas sin perder su estilo característico.

Adicionalmente, este álbum tiene dos baladas (Gekkou y Zakuro to Jubaku), que le dan una esencia suave al concepto, suponiendo que las letras cuentan una historia de Kishibojin (la diosa de la infancia y los nacimientos), que probablemente es triste o tranquila pero enviará al que escucha por un viaje musical similar a ver una película o leer un libro, por esta razón, pienso que sin estas canciones, el álbum no sería el mismo, porque es el estilo de  Onmyouza e incluso puedes esperar una balada en casi cualquiera de sus álbumes y, estoy seguro, las baladas de Onmyouza son excelentes.

Finalmente, si eres nuevo escuchando Onmyouza, vas a amar este álbum porque es el principio de una nueva era musical para ellos, pero, si tienes algunos años escuchándolos y estás familiarizado con su “antiguo” estilo, prepárate para un cambio drástico, porque, a partir de este álbum, los riffs y canciones oscuras serán más constantes. También, este álbum es de “tenencia obligatoria” incluso si no sabes japonés, su música, estilo y ritmo no te van a decepcionar.
